Toronto Birth & Postpartum FAQs

  • While hydrotherapy (labouring in a deep tub for pain relief) is widely supported at hospitals like St. Joseph's and Mount Sinai depending on room availability, actual water delivery (giving birth completely submerged in water) is primarily accessible during a planned home birth under the care of a registered Ontario midwife. Always discuss tub policies directly with your OBGYN or midwife team during your third-trimester prenatal visits.

  • Birth doulas provide continuous physical comfort, emotional grounding, and informational advocacy that complements medical care. Whether you are delivering at Mount Sinai, St. Joe's, or Sunnybrook, the Toronto Birth Centre or planning a homebirth, your doula understands the environment and works collaboratively with nurses, midwives and doctors to help you navigate your birth preferences safely.

  • Most families in Toronto connect with a birth doula early in their second trimester (around 12 to 20 weeks) to secure matching availability and enjoy ongoing prenatal support. Postpartum doula support can be arranged during pregnancy in the second trimester or after your baby arrives (although last-minute care may have limited availability), depending on your family's needs for overnight care, infant feeding assistance, and recovery help.

  • In Toronto, both obstetricians and midwives are fully funded through OHIP, but their models of care differ. OBGYNs are surgical specialists who manage both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies, typically delivering in hospital settings. Midwives specialize in low-risk, normal childbirth, offering the choice of a hospital, birth centre, or home birth, along with comprehensive at-home postpartum care for the first six weeks. You do not need a doctor's referral to apply for midwifery care, but spaces fill up incredibly fast in the GTA.

  • Because midwifery care is highly sought after in Toronto, it is best to apply the moment you get a positive home pregnancy test (often at 4 or 5 weeks gestation). Most local practices, such as the Midwives Collective of Toronto or North Don River Valley Midwifery Care, operate on a strict intake capacity and fill their monthly due-date quotas rapidly. If you miss the early window, you can ask to be placed on their waitlist, as spots occasionally open up.

  • The Toronto Birth Centre (located in the Regent Park neighbourhood) is a beautiful, low-intervention, out-of-hospital birthing space. It features large birthing tubs, spacious rooms, and family areas. To give birth at the TBC, you must be under the care of a Registered Midwife and have a low-risk pregnancy. It is an excellent middle-ground option if you want a home-like atmosphere with professional birthing amenities but prefer not to deliver at home or in a traditional hospital ward.

  • Yes. Toronto Public Health operates the Healthy Babies Healthy Children program, which provides home visits by a public health nurse and a family home visitor to eligible families who need extra support navigating life with a newborn. Additionally, the city offers free telephone support through Toronto Public Health eChat or the Health Connection line, where you can speak directly with a nurse about breastfeeding, infant sleep, and maternal mental health resources available in your specific neighbourhood.
