Giving Birth at St. Michael’s Hospital Toronto
St. Michael’s Hospital (often affectionately called "St. Mike’s") is a world-class facility located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Known for its intersection of compassionate community care and cutting-edge academic medicine, St. Mike's is uniquely equipped to handle every type of birth—from low-intervention, midwife-led births to high-risk and twin pregnancies managed by top OBGYNs.
At Mindful Sprouts Family Services, we specialize in helping expectant parents achieve a mindful, informed, and deeply empowered birth experience within the walls of St. Michael's Hospital.l Impact.
St. Mike’s Labour & Delivery: By The Numbers

Doula Support at St. Michael's Hospital
Whether your goal is an unmedicated physiological birth or you are navigating a complex high-risk pregnancy, we offer continuous physical, emotional, and informational support. We tailor our support to your chosen care team at St. Mike's:
1. For Midwifery Clients
Many families choosing St. Mike's work with renowned local practices like Seventh Generation Midwives Toronto (SGMT) or Community Midwives of Toronto. If you are aiming for a low-intervention birth, we work seamlessly alongside your midwives to:
Use Water in Labour (Hydrotherapy): St. Mike's Labour and Delivery rooms feature deep birthing tubs. We help you utilize water therapy effectively for natural pain relief and deep relaxation.
Smooth Home-to-Hospital Transitions: We provide early labour support in the comfort of your downtown or West End home, helping you stay relaxed until it’s time to transition to the hospital.
2. For OBGYN & High-Risk Clients
If you are under the care of a St. Michael’s obstetrician due to a high-risk factor, gestational diabetes, or an upcoming induction, your birth can still be deeply mindful and empowering. We specialize in:
Mindful High-Risk Births: Helping you map out "family-centred" options, such as immediate skin-to-skin, or delayed cord clamping wherever medically safe.
Twin Birth Support: St. Mike's is a preferred birthing location for multiples. We help you navigate the unique protocols of twin deliveries (which usually take place in an operating room for safety, even for vaginal births) while keeping the environment calm and focused on you.
The Postpartum Experience at St. Michael's Hospital
Once your baby is born and you have enjoyed those initial, magical moments of skin-to-skin contact, you will transition from the Labour & Delivery unit over to the postpartum floor. Understanding the layout and flow of the postpartum unit can help you feel much more grounded and prepared for your first few days as a new parent.
Rooming-In Reality
St. Michael's strongly supports rooming-in, which means your baby stays in your room with you 24/7. This practice is designed to promote bonding, help you learn your baby's early feeding cues, and establish a secure attachment right from the start. While the nurses are there to check on your medical healing and monitor your baby, you and your support person will be the primary caregivers.
Room Options & Insurance
The postpartum unit at St. Mike’s includes three tiers of accommodations. It is important to know that rooms are assigned based on availability at the exact time you transfer, so you cannot reserve a specific room type in advance:
Ward Rooms: These are standard rooms shared by up to four families, separated by privacy curtains. This option is fully covered by Ontario OHIP.
Semi-Private Rooms: A slightly more quiet option shared by two families, separated by a curtain.
Private Rooms: A completely private room for you and your family.
Pro-Tip for Admissions: If you have private health insurance that covers semi-private or private accommodation—or if you are willing to pay out-of-pocket—make sure to explicitly state your preference to the registration clerk the moment you are admitted to Labour & Delivery.
Partner and Support Person Overnight Stays
Having a supportive partner or family member with you overnight is incredibly helpful, especially with the 24/7 rooming-in model. St. Mike's fully encourages one designated support person to stay overnight.
Keep in mind that space in the postpartum rooms can be tight, particularly in ward or semi-private accommodations. The overnight setup for partners usually consists of a reclining chair next to your bed rather than a cot, so packing comfortable layers, a small travel pillow, and a blanket for your partner is highly recommended!
Lactation & Specialized Feeding Support
As a designated "Baby-Friendly" hospital, St. Michael’s has an exceptional team of nurses trained extensively in lactation support, alongside International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) right on the postpartum floor.
If you are experiencing any challenges with matching, latching, or feeding in those early hours, your doula can help you advocate for a dedicated visit from the hospital's lactation team to ensure you feel confident before heading home. If you would like additional in-home lactation, combo feeding, or bottle feeding support after discharged, you might want to hire a postpartum doula or lactation expert.
Your Questions, Answered

Many low-risk families in downtown Toronto choose midwives who hold privileges at both the Toronto Birth Centre (TBC) in Regent Park and St. Michael’s Hospital. Deciding between the two is a deeply personal choice.
The Toronto Birth Centre (TBC) is an out-of-hospital, Indigenous-led, home-like environment. It is exclusively for low-risk clients under midwifery care who plan to give birth without epidurals or medical inductions.
St. Michael’s Hospital provides a hybrid benefit: you can still have a beautifully low-intervention, midwife-led experience (including water birth!), but with the immediate peace of mind that an epidural, an OBGYN consult, or the Level IIB NICU is just down the hall if plans change.
How We Help: As your doulas, we support your choice completely. We are deeply familiar with the workflows of both environments, meaning we can pivot with you seamlessly if you choose to transfer from the TBC to St. Mike's during labour.

: St. Mike's labour and delivery rooms feature excellent deep soaking tubs for pain relief. While hospital policy technically limits tub use to labour only (immersion), we help you safely maximize this time. You might want to pack your own universal bathtub drain stopper (just in case the unit's stopper is misplaced) and have a doula support you in navigating your options if you prefer to delay stepping out of the tub.

Officially, St. Michael’s Hospital policy permits water immersion for labour only, meaning clients are expected to step out of the tub to deliver the baby. However, the deep soaking tubs are an incredible tool for pain management and relaxation during active labour.
If your goal is a true water birth, many low-risk families choose the Toronto Birth Centre or a home birth instead. If you are birthing at St. Mike's under midwifery care, your doula will help you maximize your time in the water for labour support, and we always suggest packing your own universal tub stopper in your birth bag just in case the hospital's stopper is hard to track down during shift changes!

St. Michael's is located at 30 Bond Street in downtown Toronto. While there is no direct on-site parking lot owned by the hospital, there are several public parking garages directly across the street on Bond St. and Victoria St., as well as Green P parking nearby. Because it is downtown, your doula can help your partner manage timing so no one is left stressing over a meter during active labour.

Your OB or midwife is responsible for the medical safety of you and your baby. Because they must manage clinical charting, multiple patients, or shift changes, they cannot be by your bedside continuously. A Mindful Sprouts doula provides uninterrupted, 1-to-1 physical comfort and emotional support from early labour until after your baby is born, working collaboratively with your medical team to lower stress and minimize unnecessary interventions.
