Frequently Asked Questions About Homebirth in Toronto

Transfers are a normal, safe part of home birth planning, most commonly occurring for non-emergency reasons like maternal exhaustion or a desire for epidural pain relief. If a transfer is needed, your midwife coordinates medical intake while Leah stays right by your side, managing transport logistics and continuing continuous doula care at hospitals like Mount Sinai, St. Michael’s, or St. Joseph’s.
-
Doulas and midwives form a synergistic team. Your midwives (from practices like Midwife Collective of Toronto or Community Midwives) focus on clinical monitoring of parent and baby, blood pressure, and delivery. Your doula focuses 100% on your continuous physical comfort, somatic breathing guidance, partner support, and environmental setup (like filling the birthing pool to the perfect temperature!)

Because home birth support requires being on-call 24/7 starting from 37 weeks until delivery, we limit the number of birth clients we accept each month to ensure dedicated, attentive care. Most families in Toronto reserve their birth doula care during their second trimester (around 14 to 20 weeks pregnant). However, if you are further along in your pregnancy, please reach out to check late-conception or last-minute availability!

This is one of the most common worries people have about homebirth, but home births are surprisingly clean and contained! Part of our role as your home birth doula team (working alongside your midwives) is ensuring your living space remains pristine. Before labour progresses, we assist in preparing your bed with waterproof plastic sheeting. If you are using a birthing pool, our single-use sterile liners keep all water fully contained. A Included in our Waterbirth Doula Package is a homebirth clean-up (3-hours post-birth) to handle water drainage, dispose of liners, manage laundry, and clean up the area so you can rest in a clean, quiet bedroom. Inquire about pricing for homebirth clean-up as a standalone service.
